Your Intro to Grants

Grant writing and proposals can be a daunting task with a lot of steps and required patience. There are several different categories of grants that make great starting places for you and your grant writer. Those categories are what I am going to walk you through today.

The common grants you may be looking for

If your project has anything to do with education, research, healthcare, or developing the community you may be in the market for a government grant. The government is always a great place to start your search, at the federal, state, and local levels. Also, other private organizations like nonprofits, corporations, and foundations can provide similar grants. These players in your grant journey may be a better option if your goals are more niche. Cultural programs, environmental sustainability/conservation, community groups, artistic endeavors, and entrepreneurial ventures would most likely come from these types of organizations.

How to identify what grant you need and a great starting place

What are the goals you are achieving with your grant money? If you are making scientific research breakthroughs, creating new community infrastructure, boosting state education programs, crafting or rearranging healthcare services, or making leaps in social welfare programs - federal, state, and local grants are your starting point. These types of grants are usually more general and benefit a wide array of people.

Let’s say your grant benefits a small community of people, a nature preserve, or a nonprofit organization. These would be a more niche grant. The government, especially federally might not be the first place to start. Finding corporations, nonprofits, and foundations that have similar beliefs, values, and reasons to invest in your mission is the right choice. These grants would be identified as but are not limited to foundation grants, corporate grants, research grants, nonprofit grants, individual grants, and project-based grants
